M4 East and M5 duplication flawed transport priorities

Thursday 15 July 2010

Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon, who forced the release of secret documents show an unannounced NSW budget allocation of $364 million to the M4 East, says the government's commitment to the M4 East and M5 duplication is bad news for traffic congestion and will hurt the government's election chances in Sydney's Inner West

'Pains, trains and automobiles', pp 4-5, Daily Telegraph today.

"Mega motorway proposals, like the M4 East and the M5 duplication, have hurt Labor in the past and will do so again. They are a non-solution to manage traffic congestion in Sydney," Ms Rhiannon said.

"It is clear $10 billion for the M4 East would be better spent on public transport in the many areas of Sydney deprived of this bread and butter service.

"Both the M4 East and M5 duplication will add to congestion and air pollution and divide communities. These motorway proposals will certainly not be vote winners in the Inner West.

"The Keneally government's motorway plans smack of desperation. If these are the Premier's big 'transport' plans she deserves to be kicked out at the next election.

"In the final months of the reign of NSW Labor this government should put the public before its own self interest.

"The public would welcome this $10 billion ear marked for the M4 East to instead flow to the expansion and upgrade of public transport," Ms Rhiannon said.
